Richael Timothy, a remarkable Irish paracycling athlete, shares insights into her rigorous training routine and community engagement as she prepares for the UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships in March 2024.
In October, Richael diligently continued structured training, increasing her weekly volume to 12-15 hours in various weather conditions, both indoors and outdoors.
At month's end, Richael attended a two-week training camp in Loulé, Portugal, with Mark Rohan, double Paralympic handcycling gold medallist. During the camp, she faced challenging terrain, accumulating 35 hours on the bike each week, in preparation for the hilly course of the upcoming Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
Beyond training, Richael contributed to her fitness business and engaged with the community back home during the off-season. She organised kids' fitness classes for children aged 3 to 12, focusing on fun and movement skills. Richael participated in the “Dare to Believe” program, visiting schools to share her Olympic and Paralympic experiences and inspire children to pursue their dreams. She spoke to Transition Year students about leadership and mental health. As a guest speaker for Sport Ireland's "Let's Get Visible" campaign, Richael emphasised the importance of LGBTQI+ engagement in sports, reflecting her commitment to diversity and inclusion in the sporting community.
With the Paris Paralympics 2024 also on the horizon, Richael Timothy embodies dedication, resilience and community impact, both on and off the track.
Best of luck with the remainder of your training, Richael!
